Before the aide leaves

You are a bystander waiting with your coworker Isaac and his neighbor Chirag after a late concert.

In a parking garage elevator lobby, Chirag, 34, is preparing to drive forty minutes home alone. Isaac, 29, knows Chirag worked a double shift and repeatedly nodded off during the concert. Chirag's mother needs someone present, and her aide's scheduled shift ends in forty minutes. Other concertgoers are within earshot but remain off camera; the last train has left.

The scene

Chirag: I'm driving home alone. My mom's aide leaves in forty minutes.

Isaac: People can hear us. Could we avoid making this a public confrontation?

Chirag: I know I nodded off, but she can't be left without help.

Isaac: Could we find another way without leaving your mom waiting alone?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say or do in this moment, and why?
  2. 2Describe a time you had to decide whether to step in when someone was making a choice you thought put them at risk.
