The code to the safe

You work the night desk at a hostel.

A power cut at midnight has disabled the electronic room locks, and guests are waiting in the lobby. The only master key is in the office safe, which also holds guests' passports and cash, so only the manager may open it; she is not answering her phone. You happen to know the code. A guest, Hanne, and your coworker Raj are at the desk.

What's said in the scene

Hanne: My passport's in that room and my airport bus leaves in forty minutes.

Raj: No word on the power. And the manager's still not picking up.

Hanne: Can't one of you just open the safe?

Raj: Manager only. Everyone's cash is in there. You know the code, though. Your call.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do?
  2. 2Describe a time you had to act without being able to reach the person in charge. How did you decide?
