Scene to read · Communication, Equity

He says he understands

You work at the front counter of a city housing office.

Mr. Haddad has come in about a notice saying his family must leave their apartment in 60 days unless he files an appeal by Friday. He speaks little English, so his 12-year-old son, Omar, is interpreting. Each time you explain something, Omar says only a few words to his father, and he looks close to tears.

The scene

You: It's really important that your dad knows the appeal has to be filed by Friday.

Omar: (a few words to his father, then to you) He says okay. He understands.

Omar: Can we go now? I don't want to talk about this anymore.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do?
  2. 2What are the risks of relying on family members, especially children, to interpret important information?

What raters look for

Communication
Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
Equity
Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
