Scene to read · Communication, Empathy

Small letters

You and another resident, Noam, are volunteering to hand out new key fobs in your apartment lobby.

The old keys stop working at midnight, and the table closes at eight. About twenty residents are in line. Tamika, a neighbor of seventy-eight who lives alone, is at the front of the line with her new fob, asking again how the door system works.

The scene

Tamika: I hold it here, and then? If it does not open, who comes?

Noam: It's all on the sheet, ma'am. We've got twenty people and fifteen minutes left.

Tamika: The sheet has small letters. Sorry. I only want to be sure.

Noam: I know. But they're all locked out at midnight too. Can we move along?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do, and what would you say to Tamika?
  2. 2How do you give one person the time they need when many others are waiting?

What raters look for

Communication
Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
Empathy
Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
