Scene to read · Communication, Empathy

A letter from the office

You organize the neighbors who take turns sorting parcels at the mobile home park where you live.

Your neighbor Ji-woo has turned up late for five of her last six turns, and boxes sat out in the rain. At the mailbox row at dusk, the park manager, Chetan, has just told you she must come off the schedule, and offered to send an office letter so you need not tell her yourself. Then Ji-woo walks up.

The scene

Ji-woo: Evening, both. Sorry again about Tuesday. Work switched my night hours with no warning.

Chetan: That's rough. Is that a permanent switch, or just this month?

Ji-woo: They won't say. I like doing the packages, though. Am I on Thursday?

Chetan: The office will be in touch about the schedule. Unless you'd rather explain?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Ji-woo, and to Chetan?
  2. 2When is it kinder to deliver bad news yourself, and when is it better left to a formal channel?

What raters look for

Communication
Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
Empathy
Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
