Scene to read · Ethics, Professionalism

Before opening the logs

You are the neighbor who set up your building's shared internet and holds the router's admin login.

At your kitchen table, Konstantin, 54, and Lachlan, 24, sit beside a laptop open to the router settings. Your household, theirs, and Salma's family make four households paying equal shares. Konstantin wants you to open existing device-level usage logs to check suspected heavy streaming; Salma, who isn't present, has objected that the records could expose her family's viewing habits.

The scene

Konstantin: Can you open the existing device logs? One flat's streaming all day.

Lachlan: Salma's worried those records reveal her family's viewing habits, not just totals.

Konstantin: Without some evidence, we're paying equal shares without knowing whether that's fair.

Lachlan: You hold the login, but we never agreed you'd inspect individual devices.

The two questions

  1. 1How would you respond to the request to open the device-level logs, and why?
  2. 2Tell us about a time you had to balance fairness to a group against one person's privacy. What did you do?
