The judge's niece

You are one of three volunteer judges for the senior division of a regional high school science fair.

The winning project earns a $2,000 scholarship. During the lunch break, in the judges' room, a fellow judge, Ms. Park, pulls you aside just as the third judge, Mr. Kowalski, walks in.

What's said in the scene

Ms. Park: Did you know the water-filter project is by Greg's niece? He gave her a ten on everything.

Mr. Kowalski: I'd have scored it the same if I'd never met her. It's the best project here.

Ms. Park: (to you) Scores are due in twenty minutes. What do we do?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do?
  2. 2How should people handle being asked to make a decision in which they have a personal stake?
