Written scenario · Equity, Ethics

Counting volunteer hours

You sit on a student committee that awards a leadership scholarship.

One scoring criterion is the number of unpaid volunteer hours an applicant has completed. While reviewing files, another committee member points out that several strong applicants have few volunteer hours because they work paid jobs to support their families. Scoring closes tomorrow.

The two questions

  1. 1How should the committee handle this?
  2. 2Describe a time you noticed a rule or policy that affected people unequally. What did you do?

What raters look for

Equity
Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
Ethics
Weighs competing duties honestly, protects people from harm, and stays accountable to rules and values.
