Hale 114
You are a teaching assistant who handles room bookings and announcements for a large lecture.
Last night your email sent two hundred people to Hale 114 for tomorrow's chemistry midterm; it is in the gym annex. The booking form had pre-filled last term's room. Whoever sends a notice signs the correction, and a second signed correction, which this would be, usually means not being rehired. In the cramped office the assistants share, Long, who leads the team, has drafted the correction, and Chun, a fellow assistant, reads it.
The scene
Long: My draft blames the booking form. It did pre-fill Hale 114. Hardly a lie.
Chun: It's half the story. The sender signs, so people know who to ask.
Long: Sign a second one, they'll let you go. I'm looking out for you.
Chun: Everyone will wonder who sent them to Hale. Your email. Which version goes out?
The two questions
- 1Which correction would you send, and what would you say to Long and Chun?
- 2When, if ever, is it acceptable to hide who made a mistake as long as the mistake is fixed?
What raters look for
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
- Professionalism
- Is reliable, respects boundaries and confidentiality, and holds a consistent standard under pressure.
