Shouting from the far shore

You are sheltering from a storm at a lakeside park with your friend Samir.

Lightning is striking near the lake. From the covered picnic shelter, you and Samir both think you heard faint shouting from the trail on the far shore, ten minutes away on foot. Xiang, another visitor, who has just phoned emergency services, is sheltering with you.

The scene

Samir: There it is again. Somebody's out there. I'm going. Come with me.

Xiang: Nobody goes. Lightning's right over the water. Rescue said twenty minutes.

Samir: Twenty minutes is forever if someone's in that lake.

Xiang: And if it was a bird, they'll be rescuing three of us.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do, and what would you say to Samir and Xiang?
  2. 2How do you make a decision when acting and waiting both carry serious risk and you cannot check the facts?
