Written scenario · Empathy, Equity

Pacing by the entrance

You are waiting in a hotel lobby for an airport shuttle with a coworker, Jun-ho.

A woman in a rumpled coat is pacing near the entrance, talking quietly to herself and looking upset. You cannot tell whether she is a guest, whether she is on a call through an earpiece, or whether she would want help at all. Jun-ho mutters that you should keep your distance: she is clearly not well, he says, and strangers stepping in can make things worse. Your shuttle leaves in four minutes. You could approach her, quietly mention it to the front desk, or stay where you are.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do, and what would you say to Jun-ho?
  2. 2Describe a time you were unsure whether a stranger needed help. What did you do, and what did you learn?

What raters look for

Empathy
Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
Equity
Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
