Scene to read · Ethics, Communication
This one's your size
You are a member of a hiking club, packing up after its gear swap fundraiser.
The swap has just ended in a church fellowship hall. The club has no rule about unsold donations; in past years they went to a thrift store. While you fold tables with Ian, Hui, another member, is putting unsold jackets and headlamps into her own bag, and she holds one jacket out to you.
The scene
Hui: These didn't sell. I'm taking a few for my niece's school club. Here, this one's your size.
Ian: Hang on. People donated those to raise money for us.
Hui: And nobody bought them. There's no rule. Otherwise it's a thrift store bin.
Ian: Maybe so. Still feels odd. Are you taking that jacket, then?
The two questions
- 1What would you do about the jacket, and what would you say to Hui and Ian?
- 2When no rule covers a situation, how do you decide what is acceptable?
What raters look for
- Ethics
- Weighs competing duties honestly, protects people from harm, and stays accountable to rules and values.
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
