Finishing my sentences
You are a member of your university's debate club.
After practice, your teammate Ibrahim, who has a stutter, walks out with you. During practice, another member, Claire, repeatedly finished his sentences for him.
What's said in the scene
Ibrahim: I know Claire thinks she's helping. But every time she finishes my sentence, I just want to stop talking.
Ibrahim: Please don't make a big deal of it. I don't know. What would you do?
The two questions
- 1How would you respond to Ibrahim, and would you do anything else?
- 2Describe a time you tried to help someone and realized it was not the help they wanted.
What raters look for
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
