Double on the same corner

You are a volunteer on a city pedestrian count.

The count will decide whether your neighborhood gets a new crosswalk. On a bench at your corner, fellow volunteers Casimir and Isabel show you the tally sheets: Walt, a longtime counter and the coordinator's favorite, logged twice as many walkers as anyone else at the same spot. Walt has gone home.

The scene

Casimir: Same corner, same hour, Walt has double. He padded it.

Isabel: Two people got hurt crossing here last year. If padding gets a crosswalk, good.

Casimir: Report it, and the coordinator may throw out the whole corner.

Isabel: We never even asked Walt. So, are you keeping this between us?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do, and why?
  2. 2Can a good outcome justify using information you believe is inaccurate? Why or why not?
