Scene to read · Ethics, Self-awareness
Party of four
You are checking in at a campground, where you booked one site for a weekend with friends.
You booked one site without noticing the four-person limit, and six of you came. It is getting dark, every campground nearby is full, and two friends who came by bus cannot get home tonight. Your close friend Fatou whispered that two can sleep in the car in the parking lot. She stands beside you in the check-in office as Benicio, the ranger, opens your booking.
The scene
Benicio: Welcome. One site, two nights. How many are in your party?
Fatou: Four. Just the four of us, two little tents. Right?
Benicio: Good, because over four I can't check a site in at all. Fire lanes. You booked it, so I need it from you.
The two questions
- 1What would you say to Benicio, and why?
- 2How do you tell the difference between a harmless shortcut and a rule you should not bend?
What raters look for
- Ethics
- Weighs competing duties honestly, protects people from harm, and stays accountable to rules and values.
- Self-awareness
- Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
