Scene to read · Ethics, Communication
Too good a pie
You are a volunteer judge at a farmers market pie contest.
Entries must be homemade. Ebony, a vendor whose past entries were plain, has entered a pie far better than anything on the table. She already has one rules warning from the market, and a second could cost her stall. In the judging tent, your fellow judge Cyrus puts down his fork as she comes to collect her dish.
The scene
Cyrus: Ebony, straight question. That crust looks like a bakery's. Did you make this?
Ebony: I took a class all winter. I can't prove it, but yes.
Cyrus: Last year yours fell apart. I think we should flag it.
Ebony: A flag costs me my stall. You tasted it too. What do you think?
The two questions
- 1What would you do, and what would you say to Cyrus and Ebony?
- 2How should you act on a suspicion you cannot prove when being wrong would be costly for someone?
What raters look for
- Ethics
- Weighs competing duties honestly, protects people from harm, and stays accountable to rules and values.
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
