Cash and a driver's license
You are leaving a convention center to lead a client pitch across town.
You and your coworker Shmuel are due at the pitch in twenty-five minutes and fly home straight afterward. As your ride pulls up, you notice an unattended purse on a bench by the entrance, with cash and a driver's license inside. The venue's lost-and-found desk is a ten-minute walk back through the halls. Halima, your driver, leans out of the window.
The scene
Halima: Two minutes, then I'm fined for blocking this lane.
Shmuel: Leave it. She'll come back for it. We can't be late today.
Halima: Cash on a bench here? Gone in five minutes.
Shmuel: Take it and she comes back to nothing. There's no phone number in there. Come on.
The two questions
- 1What would you do with the purse, and why?
- 2How do you weigh a duty to a stranger against a commitment you have already made to others?
What raters look for
- Ethics
- Weighs competing duties honestly, protects people from harm, and stays accountable to rules and values.
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
