Scene to read · Ethics, Self-awareness

Out of the recycling

You study music theory part-time at a conservatory.

Chorale exercises are due Friday, and you and Divya, who sits beside you, are both stuck. In the department hallway, Shirin has lifted an earlier group's corrected exercises out of the recycling bin: the same five chorales, each with its writer's name and the teacher's comments.

The scene

Shirin: Look what's in the paper bin! Last spring's chorales, the same five, corrected.

Divya: Teacher's comments and all. This one says 'did you even try?'

Shirin: Thrown out means public. Half the class gets these from older friends anyway.

Divya: We are both stuck. Still, it's like reading someone's mail. What do you think?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do, and what would you say to Shirin and Divya?
  2. 2If no rule forbids something, how do you decide whether it is still wrong?
