Draw again

You are a volunteer running the raffle table at a community hall fundraiser.

The grand prize is a weekend trip donated by a local business. You have just drawn the winning ticket, and it belongs to Pam, the event's organizer, who paid for it like everyone else. Nobody else has seen it. Pam and the treasurer, Lou, are beside you.

What's said in the scene

Lou: The organizer wins the grand prize? Nobody will believe it. Draw again.

Pam: I paid for that ticket like everybody else. But I see how it looks.

Lou: Just drop it back in. No one saw.

Pam: I won't tell you what to do. You drew it.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do?
  2. 2Which matters more: that a process is fair, or that it looks fair? Explain.

What raters look for
