Scene to read · Ethics, Communication

One seat empty

You are in the weekly hands-on session of an electronics course, where attendance counts.

Miss two sessions and you fail, and Ines, a close friend, has missed one. She is at a job interview this afternoon and asked you to sign in for her; before you had decided, Cesar, who is close to you both, did it. In the doorway of the teaching workshop, Gerald, who runs the session, has counted heads against the attendance sheet and calls you and Cesar over.

The scene

Gerald: One seat's empty and the sheet's full. Somebody signed for Ines. Who was it?

Cesar: Nobody signed for anybody. She was at the parts cabinet a minute ago.

Gerald: Tell me who and it's a warning. Otherwise it's her second absence.

Cesar: She's here. Come on, you saw her too.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Gerald, and why?
  2. 2When, if ever, does loyalty to a friend justify misleading someone in authority?
