Scene to read · Ethics, Empathy

Two rounds left

You are at a weekend chess tournament supporting a close friend.

The tournament has a $5,000 first prize. Your close friend Russell has just told you he plans to check a chess app in the restroom during the final rounds. His father's surgery is next month, and the family cannot cover it. His stepsister Valeria is with you both in the hallway outside the hall.

The scene

Russell: Two rounds left. I'm not proud of it, but Dad's surgery won't pay for itself.

Valeria: Please, just stay quiet. Who gets hurt?

Russell: The player I'd beat, I guess. I know. I still don't see another way.

Valeria: Round starts in five minutes. Are you with us or not?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do, and what would you say to Russell and Valeria?
  2. 2Does a good reason for breaking a rule change how you should respond to the person breaking it?

What raters look for

Ethics
Weighs competing duties honestly, protects people from harm, and stays accountable to rules and values.
Empathy
