Scene to read · Motivation, Problem solving
Before I'm forty
You are visiting your parents with your partner, Tamar.
You and Tamar signed a mortgage last year. On your parents' patio, Tamar has just told your mother, Josefina, that she plans to leave her payroll job in the fall to train as a teacher. You have gone over the budget together, and it is tight but possible.
The scene
Josefina: Thirty-five, good salary, and you quit for a classroom? In my day, that was irresponsible.
Tamar: Twelve years of payroll. I want one try at teaching before forty.
Josefina: With whose money? You two just signed a mortgage.
Tamar: You've seen the numbers. What do you honestly think?
The two questions
- 1What would you say to Tamar and to your mother?
- 2Tell us about a time you or someone close to you gave up security for something more meaningful. What did you learn from it?
What raters look for
- Motivation
- Shows genuine, sustained drive and a clear reason for choices, including when work is unglamorous.
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
