Another bag
You live in a forty-unit apartment building with a shared courtyard.
The management company gave your building's superintendent, Yolanda, no budget to clear the courtyard, so she posted a sign-up for a Saturday cleanup. You are the only resident who came. An hour in, Madhuri from the third floor stops on her way out.
The scene
Madhuri: No offense, but we pay rent. Do this free, and they'll never hire anyone.
Yolanda: Management gave me no budget. If we stop, it stays like this.
Madhuri: Then let it stay, so they finally get complaints. That's how it changes.
Yolanda: Maybe. Here's another bag, if you're staying.
The two questions
- 1What would you do, and what would you say to Madhuri and Yolanda?
- 2Describe a time you kept working on something when others had decided it was not their job. What kept you going?
What raters look for
- Motivation
- Shows genuine, sustained drive and a clear reason for choices, including when work is unglamorous.
- Professionalism
- Is reliable, respects boundaries and confidentiality, and holds a consistent standard under pressure.
