Scene to read · Motivation, Professionalism
Thirty thousand steps
You sit beside Dinesh at work and are taking part in the office step challenge.
The month's winner chooses a charity for a $500 company donation, and the rules count "any steps your phone records." You have watched Dinesh shake his phone at his desk to pile up steps for an animal rescue. In the break area, Keiko, the organizer, finds you both at the leaderboard.
The scene
Keiko: Thirty thousand steps a day, Dinesh! Come on, what's your secret?
Dinesh: Good shoes, lots of stairs. And the animal rescue gets five hundred dollars.
Keiko: I want tips for Friday's newsletter. You sit beside him. What's he doing?
Dinesh: Careful. Whatever you say goes in print.
The two questions
- 1What would you say to Keiko and Dinesh?
- 2Describe a time you saw someone reach a goal by a shortcut that missed the point of it. What did you do?
What raters look for
- Motivation
- Shows genuine, sustained drive and a clear reason for choices, including when work is unglamorous.
- Professionalism
- Is reliable, respects boundaries and confidentiality, and holds a consistent standard under pressure.
