Double for Thursdays
You are a tutor who works with adult learners at a public library.
Every Thursday evening you tutor Shreya, 70, for free as she prepares for her citizenship test next month. Rosalinda, a paying client, wants that same slot for her own exam preparation. You are short on rent this month. As Rosalinda makes her offer in the study room, Shreya arrives at the door.
The scene
Rosalinda: Thursdays are the only evening I'm free. I'll pay double your usual rate.
Shreya: Oh. I'm early. I can wait outside if you two are talking business.
Rosalinda: Please stay. I didn't know this slot was yours.
Shreya: You should take paying work. I've had six months of your kindness already.
The two questions
- 1What would you do, and what would you say to Rosalinda and Shreya?
- 2Describe a time you had to choose between work that paid and work that mattered to you. How did you decide?
What raters look for
- Motivation
- Shows genuine, sustained drive and a clear reason for choices, including when work is unglamorous.
- Equity
- Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
