Ignore me before six
You share an apartment with your friend Amal.
Amal, 66, has taken up running this year and made you promise to get her up for five a.m. runs no matter what she says. This morning she has come to the apartment door in her robe. Her running partner, Teresa, is waiting in the hallway.
The scene
Amal: Not today. It's dark, it's cold, and I'm an adult.
Teresa: I drove twenty minutes in the dark for this, Amal. Tomorrow I can't come.
Teresa: You wrote 'ignore me before six' on the fridge yourself.
Amal: I know what I made you promise. I'm asking now. Which me do you listen to?
The two questions
- 1What would you say to Amal?
- 2Describe a time you asked someone to hold you to a goal, or were asked to do it for someone else. What made it work or not?
What raters look for
- Motivation
- Shows genuine, sustained drive and a clear reason for choices, including when work is unglamorous.
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
