The emptying snack box
You are the person who restocks the shared snack shelf in your student lounge.
For weeks you have restocked the honesty-box shelf partly at your own expense. The box is nearly empty, and a few regulars seem to take much more than they put in. You could post a polite reminder with real figures, switch to a fixed monthly contribution, or stop running the shelf. Each option has a cost: reminders may shame people, a fee may exclude those with little money, and stopping ends something everyone enjoyed.
The two questions
- 1What would you do about the shelf, and what would you say to the people who use it?
- 2How do you decide when to keep putting effort into something voluntary that others are not supporting equally?
What raters look for
- Motivation
- Shows genuine, sustained drive and a clear reason for choices, including when work is unglamorous.
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
