Keeping score

You are a member of a table tennis club.

Your friend Rashid played at the club for twenty years until a shoulder injury ended it last spring. The club secretary, Margaret, has asked him to become the official scorer for league nights. In the club hall before play starts, he has just told you he would rather stop coming.

The scene

Margaret: We need you, Rashid. Nobody knows the rules like you do.

Rashid: Sitting two feet from the table with a clipboard? I'd rather remember it than watch it.

Margaret: You shouldn't lose the whole club along with the shoulder.

Rashid: You know me best. Am I wrong to just want to be done?

The two questions

  1. 1How would you answer Rashid?
  2. 2Describe a time you had to find a new reason to keep going with something after your part in it changed.

What raters look for

Motivation
Shows genuine, sustained drive and a clear reason for choices, including when work is unglamorous.
Empathy
Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
