Scene to read · Motivation, Professionalism

It no longer counts

You walk dogs and clean kennels at an animal shelter on Sunday mornings.

You started a year ago, partly to strengthen an application, and last week the program you wanted accepted you. A garden center has offered you paid Sunday work until term starts, but months ago you told Birgit, who runs the rota, that you would stay through the winter. You are in your friend Lerato's parked car outside when Birgit comes to the open window with next month's schedule.

The scene

Lerato: You got in. So why are we still here at seven on a Sunday?

Birgit: I heard that! Congratulations. I've got you down for four Sundays next month.

Lerato: Tell her about the garden center. It pays, and it's Sundays.

Birgit: Oh. Winter's when everyone quits on me. Should I keep your name on?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Birgit and Lerato, and why?
  2. 2Describe a time your original reason for a commitment disappeared. What did you do about the commitment?
