Nineteen warranties
You are in your second week selling appliances on commission.
Ayumi, the store's top seller, adds a five-year warranty to nearly every sale, including a basic toaster oven you watched her ring up this morning. Warranties pay the highest commission in the store, and you have sold none. On the sales floor, your manager, Pranav, stops by with the weekly numbers.
The scene
Pranav: Ayumi sold nineteen warranties this week. That keeps our lights on. You're at zero.
Ayumi: I just ask everyone. Some people sleep better with it. It's their call.
Pranav: Shadow her this afternoon. Your paycheck will thank you.
Ayumi: Happy to show you my pitch. Want to start with the next customer?
The two questions
- 1How would you respond to Pranav and Ayumi, and how would you approach your own sales?
- 2Describe a time you could have gained from doing something you were not fully comfortable with. What did you decide?
What raters look for
- Motivation
- Shows genuine, sustained drive and a clear reason for choices, including when work is unglamorous.
- Ethics
- Weighs competing duties honestly, protects people from harm, and stays accountable to rules and values.
