The plan in the drawer
Long-term goals can carry real costs: years of tuition, delayed earnings, fees that add up, and the chance that it still won't work out. Many people quietly sketch a second plan, one that might pay sooner or ask less of them, in case the first one stalls.
The two questions
- 1Tell us about a time you seriously considered a backup path for a goal you cared about. What drew you to that alternative, and what difficulties or drawbacks did you expect it to bring?
- 2Describe a time when weighing an alternative like that taught you something about why you still want your first choice. How did you decide whether to keep going or to adjust your plans?
What raters look for
- Motivation
- Shows genuine, sustained drive and a clear reason for choices, including when work is unglamorous.
- Self-awareness
- Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
