Scene to read · Motivation, Empathy

I only signed up for you

You are training for a charity half marathon with your friend Jules.

Friends and coworkers have pledged about two thousand dollars to a shelter if you both finish. The race is in three weeks. Last year Jules got up at five every morning to train beside you while you came back from an injury. After a hard run in the park, she sits down on a bench beside your coach, Renee.

The scene

Jules: I'm done. I hate every mile. I only signed up because you asked me.

Renee: Three weeks left, Jules. People pledged because of both your names.

Jules: Then I'll cover my half of the pledges myself.

Jules: You got me into this. Do you want me to finish or not?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Jules?
  2. 2Describe a goal you kept working toward after the excitement wore off. What kept you going?

What raters look for

Motivation
Shows genuine, sustained drive and a clear reason for choices, including when work is unglamorous.
Empathy
Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
