Leaving before the neighborhood fair

You are a friend of both Absalom and Adalberto, and Adalberto has asked you for advice.

At a friend's get-together on a rooftop terrace, Adalberto, 35, and Absalom, 65, discuss Adalberto's acceptance into a creative course in another city. Its mandatory start date falls before the neighborhood fair they committed to organizing together. Absalom, his closest friend, has been gently encouraging him to stay; a replacement organizer hasn't been found.

The scene

Adalberto: I'm excited about this course, but leaving means missing our neighborhood fair.

Absalom: I'd really miss having you nearby, and organizing alone feels overwhelming.

Adalberto: I want to help find someone, not give up my place entirely.

Absalom: Could you help us work out what's fair before he accepts?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Adalberto and Absalom, and how would you help them move forward?
  2. 2Tell us about a time you pursued a goal that affected someone close to you. How did you handle their feelings and any shared commitments?
