Scene to read · Motivation, Self-awareness
Do you even like gardening?
You live in an apartment building with a shared rooftop garden.
Ifeoma, 75, has looked after the rooftop garden almost alone since the other residents drifted away, including Long, who used to help. Last summer she watered your plants for a month while you were away. You come up to find the two of them by the tomato beds.
The scene
Long: Ifeoma, your knees can't do this anymore. Hand it to our friend here.
Ifeoma: I'd rather have six lazy neighbors back than one tired volunteer.
Long: They won't come back. Somebody young and keen just needs to own it.
Ifeoma: Don't say yes because of the watering. Do you even like gardening?
The two questions
- 1What would you say to Ifeoma and Long?
- 2Describe a time you took something on mainly because you felt you owed someone. How did it go?
What raters look for
- Motivation
- Shows genuine, sustained drive and a clear reason for choices, including when work is unglamorous.
- Self-awareness
- Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
