Beyond the training slides
You are a hospital information-desk volunteer offered responsibility for improving new volunteers' training.
In the hospital volunteer office, Clovis, the coordinator, 45, and Conall, a fellow volunteer, 58, discuss the offer with you. You joined for face-to-face contact with visitors. Recent trainees have needed substantial help during supervised desk shifts despite completing classroom sessions. The team badly needs a trainer, and redesigning and delivering training would take most of your weekly hours.
The scene
Clovis: I'd like you to train volunteers; our current sessions aren't preparing them.
Conall: They know the slides, but freeze when visitors ask unexpected questions.
Clovis: You could redesign training, but that would replace most desk hours.
Conall: Your visitor experience could help; would you actually enjoy teaching from it?
The two questions
- 1How would you respond to the training offer, and what would you want to understand before committing?
- 2How do you distinguish work that feels personally rewarding from work where you can make a useful contribution?
What raters look for
- Motivation
- Shows genuine, sustained drive and a clear reason for choices, including when work is unglamorous.
- Self-awareness
- Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
