Scene to read · Motivation, Resilience

After the promotion, what next?

You are the vice-captain of an ultimate frisbee team and have a vote on whether to enter the tournament.

Bench by the field after practice. Eladio, the captain, and Elian, a longtime player, are talking. The team just earned promotion to the higher division, and practices have gotten sluggish. A costly out-of-town tournament has been floated, and you will help decide whether to pursue it.

The scene

Eladio: Practice felt flat again. Maybe the out-of-town tournament would motivate everyone.

Elian: It's costly, though. We just earned promotion. Can't we enjoy that awhile?

Eladio: We can, but I've watched teams coast after winning and fade.

Elian: Pushing too hard loses people. You're vice-captain. Which way do you lean?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do in this situation, and why?
  2. 2Tell us about a time you had to find new motivation after reaching a goal, or after a stretch where your energy had dropped. What did you do?
