Scene to read · Motivation, Self-awareness
Twelve dollars an hour
You are a year into a three-year, low-paid pottery apprenticeship.
In the studio's wheel room, your friend Malik has dropped by with news from his family's firm. Your teacher, Seung, is working at the next wheel and can hear everything. You have told both of them that you are struggling to cover rent.
The scene
Malik: Dad's firm needs an office coordinator. Fifty-two thousand, benefits. I told him to hire you.
Seung: Two more years here and you could run your own studio.
Malik: Two more years at twelve an hour, behind on rent.
Seung: That's fair. I can't pay more, and I can't hold your place if you go.
The two questions
- 1What would you say to Malik and Seung, and how would you decide?
- 2Describe a time you had to choose between something that paid off quickly and something that mattered to you. What did you choose, and why?
What raters look for
- Motivation
- Shows genuine, sustained drive and a clear reason for choices, including when work is unglamorous.
- Self-awareness
- Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
