Scene to read · Motivation, Self-awareness
Where does it lead?
You wheel hospital patients to their appointments two mornings a week, unpaid.
You have done it for a year. Your old friend Jakub, a retired electrician, thinks you should put your energy into a paid evening wiring course instead; it would leave you too tired for those mornings, and his old contractor hires people with the certificate. He is waiting in the transport bay to take you to lunch when Gonzalo, who runs the transport team, comes over to ask whether you will stay another year.
The scene
Jakub: My old outfit's hiring in the fall. Do the wiring course and you're in.
Gonzalo: People ask for you by name. I'd need a full year, though.
Jakub: Gonzalo, I believe you. But where does it lead?
Gonzalo: Maybe nowhere. I still need an answer by Friday.
The two questions
- 1What would you decide, and what would you say to Jakub and Gonzalo?
- 2Describe a time you had to choose between something you found meaningful and something that would move you forward. How did you decide?
What raters look for
- Motivation
- Shows genuine, sustained drive and a clear reason for choices, including when work is unglamorous.
- Self-awareness
- Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
