Scene to read · Professionalism, Ethics

The list left out

You work part-time for your uncle's home-based holiday lighting business with your cousins, the brothers Daoud and Tavita.

The three of you are stacking boxes in your uncle's attic while he is out on a job. A rival installer has offered Daoud a job and asked to see your uncle's customer price list, which was lying open on a box when you came up.

The scene

Daoud: I'm sending them the price list tonight. Customers see those numbers anyway.

Tavita: He never leaves that out. What if he's checking which of us stays loyal?

Daoud: Then he could've just asked me. Four years, and not one raise.

Tavita: Maybe. I honestly can't tell. You've gone quiet over there. What do you think?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do, and what would you say to Daoud?
  2. 2Describe a time you were caught between loyalty to one person and honesty with another. What did you do?
