The nicer tile
You recommended a contractor to your father for his bathroom renovation.
Yael, a contractor you know from the neighborhood, has laid half of a custom tile that costs two thousand dollars more than your father Kofi's budget and cannot be returned. In the half-tiled bathroom, they disagree about a phone call that nobody else heard.
The scene
Yael: I called you on the ninth, Kofi. You said, 'Go with the nicer one.'
Kofi: I said it looked nicer. Nobody mentioned a price.
Yael: You know my work. I can't swallow two thousand dollars on one job.
Kofi: You brought her here. So you tell us, who pays?
The two questions
- 1How would you handle this, and what would you say to Kofi and Yael?
- 2Tell us about a time you were caught between two people who each trusted you. What did you do?
What raters look for
- Professionalism
- Is reliable, respects boundaries and confidentiality, and holds a consistent standard under pressure.
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
