Scene to read · Professionalism, Communication

Between floors

You are a hospital volunteer.

In the elevator, Nasser, the senior staff member who approves your hours, has just briefed a colleague about a patient, using his full name and room number, while other people rode along. The colleague and the rest stepped out a floor ago. Only you, Nasser and Winona, a stranger in a winter coat, remain.

The scene

Winona: I now know a stranger's name, room and troubles. Is that normal here?

Nasser: Her shift ended at that floor. It was my one chance to brief her.

Winona: I'd hate that to be my husband. You work here, what do you think?

Nasser: You've seen how short-staffed we are. When else could I have done it?

The two questions

  1. 1How would you respond to Nasser and Winona in the elevator, and what would you do afterward?
  2. 2Describe a time you saw someone more senior than you fall short of a standard. What did you do?
