She'd rather wait for Kang
You are a trainee receptionist in your first week at an eye clinic, standing beside the front desk.
At the front desk beside the frame display wall, Jaya, 72, a longtime patient, is checking in for an appointment in ten minutes. Kang, 50, the senior receptionist, is covering several waiting phone calls. You have been trained on insurance check-ins this week and are standing beside them.
The scene
Jaya: Last year someone new billed the wrong plan. I'll wait for you.
Kang: I've got three calls holding, Jaya. Our trainee knows the system.
Jaya: I'm sure they're lovely, but I can't risk another billing mix-up.
Kang: I can't leave these calls right now. Please handle her check-in.
The two questions
- 1What would you do and say in this moment, and why?
- 2Describe a time someone hesitated to trust you with a task because you were new or less experienced. How did you respond?
What raters look for
- Professionalism
- Is reliable, respects boundaries and confidentiality, and holds a consistent standard under pressure.
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
