Scene to read · Professionalism, Empathy
The final stays Saturday
You are the setter and captain of a volleyball team in an adult league.
Saturday's league final falls on the morning your family gathers, two hours away, to remember your grandfather; the funeral was last month, and your mother has said she will understand either way. Your team cannot field a side without you. After practice at the community center gym, your teammate Devon and the league coordinator, Mansour, are with you.
The scene
Mansour: I asked again. The gym's booked solid. The final stays Saturday at ten.
Devon: Without you we're five, and five's a forfeit.
Devon: It's my last match before I move. Three seasons to get here.
Mansour: I can't tell you what's right. I just need a roster by tonight.
The two questions
- 1Where would you be on Saturday, and what would you tell your team and your family?
- 2Describe a time a personal commitment and a commitment to a group could not both be kept. How did you decide?
What raters look for
- Professionalism
- Is reliable, respects boundaries and confidentiality, and holds a consistent standard under pressure.
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
