An exception to the rotation
You are the volunteer steward who manages guest-room bookings at your housing co-op.
In the hallway outside the shared guest room, residents Leandra, 32, and Leif, 45, want the same weekend. The co-op's rotation gives Leif, your friend, priority this time; he has planned around it for his friend's monthly visit. Leandra requests an exception for her cousin's wedding visit. The policy allows exceptions by mutual agreement or committee review, but gives no criteria; neither booking is confirmed.
The scene
Leandra: Could this qualify for an exception? The wedding date can't be moved.
Leif: I planned around my turn; my friend visits when her schedule allows.
Leandra: I respect the rotation, but another weekend wouldn't help my cousin attend.
Leif: I'd consider alternatives, but I don't want regular visits to count less.
The two questions
- 1How would you handle Leandra's exception request while maintaining neutrality toward Leif, your friend?
- 2When should a neutral allocation policy allow exceptions, and how can those exceptions remain fair?
What raters look for
- Professionalism
- Is reliable, respects boundaries and confidentiality, and holds a consistent standard under pressure.
- Equity
- Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
