Scene to read · Professionalism, Empathy
Third time this month
You are a receptionist standing at the front counter beside Harvey.
At a hearing aid center, you and Harvey cover the front counter while Hannes, the office manager, supervises. Waiting clients sit just around the corner, within earshot. Hannes has corrected Harvey sharply several times this month, and Harvey quietly asked you not to get involved. Now, during the lunch lull, it happens again.
The scene
Hannes: Harvey, Mr. Okafor drove an hour for nothing. Third time this month.
Harvey: I know, and I'm sorry. I'll call him today and rebook it.
Hannes: Sorry is cheap. Is this job too much? Everyone out front heard.
Harvey: I've got it, Hannes. Please, I'll handle it myself. Nobody needs to step in.
The two questions
- 1What would you do after this exchange, and why?
- 2How do you decide when to respect someone's wish to handle a problem alone, and when to act anyway?
What raters look for
- Professionalism
- Is reliable, respects boundaries and confidentiality, and holds a consistent standard under pressure.
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
