Scene to read · Professionalism, Communication
One bad moment
You ride on your college equestrian team.
After practice, you saw your teammate Diego yank hard on a team horse's lead rope and slap its neck when it balked at the wash stall. Regionals are in ten days. In the barn aisle, the team captain, Kenya, who sets the competition lineup, noticed you watching.
The scene
Kenya: I saw it too. It's one bad moment. Diego's carrying a lot before regionals.
Diego: He planted his feet and I lost my temper. It won't happen again.
Kenya: So it's handled. Bringing it up now only rattles the whole team.
Diego: If you've got something to say to me, though, say it.
The two questions
- 1What would you say to Diego and Kenya?
- 2Describe a time you saw a peer do something you thought was wrong and someone with influence over you wanted it left alone. What did you do?
What raters look for
- Professionalism
- Is reliable, respects boundaries and confidentiality, and holds a consistent standard under pressure.
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
