Your manager bowls sixth

You coach an adult beginners' bowling team in the evenings.

Five of your seven bowlers start in Saturday's league match. The team agreed in September that the last three practice scores decide who starts. On those scores your manager at your day job, one of the weaker players, sits a single pin behind Maricel, a newcomer who has started the last two matches while your manager sat out both. At work today your manager said, half joking, that it would be nice to start before review season; your review is next month. You post the lineup tonight.

The two questions

  1. 1Who would you start, and how would you handle it with your manager?
  2. 2How do you keep a decision fair when one of the people affected has power over you elsewhere?

What raters look for

Professionalism
Is reliable, respects boundaries and confidentiality, and holds a consistent standard under pressure.
Equity
Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
