Written scenario · Professionalism, Communication
Anything interesting today?
You spend Saturday mornings wheeling the newspaper trolley around a hospital as a volunteer.
On today's round the town's much-loved former mayor bought a crossword magazine from you, joked for ten minutes and said with a wink, "If anyone asks, I'm in fine form." You could not tell whether she meant it as permission or as a pleasantry, and she looked more tired than she sounded. The agreement you signed says not to discuss who is in the hospital. At dinner your close friend Stanley, who worked on her campaigns, asks whether anything interesting happened on your shift, then admits he has heard she is seriously ill and asks, as a favor, whether it is true.
The two questions
- 1What would you say to Stanley?
- 2Where is the line between being open with the people close to you and keeping to yourself what you learn in a position of trust?
What raters look for
- Professionalism
- Is reliable, respects boundaries and confidentiality, and holds a consistent standard under pressure.
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
