Scene to read · Professionalism, Empathy
Slow practice, one more seat
You are a volunteer coach at a rowing club who helps run a learn-to-row class.
After a class in the tank room, you offer optional extra practice to your longtime friend Eliska, 63, outside scheduled team time. You have no say in selection. Another class member, Elodie, 33, has just asked to join those sessions.
The scene
Elodie: Eliska says you run extra practice. Could I join you both next week?
Eliska: Those sessions are the only place I feel okay learning slowly, honestly.
Elodie: I'm slow too. I just don't want to fall behind everyone else.
Eliska: I don't mind her coming, but I'm asking you to protect that quiet time.
The two questions
- 1What would you do, and what would you say to Eliska and Elodie?
- 2Tell us about a time you had to set a boundary with a friend while still caring about how they felt. What did you do, and what happened?
What raters look for
- Professionalism
- Is reliable, respects boundaries and confidentiality, and holds a consistent standard under pressure.
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
