Same disinfectant, different story
You clean a vacation rental for its owner, Lakshmi, and you depend on the hours she gives you.
Lakshmi dropped the professional sanitizing service her listing promises, so you cleaned and disinfected the place yourself this morning. Ten minutes ago she quietly asked you to tell guests it was professionally sanitized, because this booking covers her overdue property tax and your hours, and a cancellation would cost you both. Nia, a guest, has arrived two hours early while her brother, recovering from an illness, waits in the car.
The scene
Nia: Sorry we're so early. My brother's just out of the hospital. It was professionally sanitized?
Lakshmi: Every surface, this morning, with the same disinfectant the service always used.
Lakshmi: Let's get your brother inside before he gets chilled; it's ready for him.
Nia: One second. You cleaned it. Was it a professional service? Please be straight.
The two questions
- 1What would you say to Nia, and why?
- 2How do you decide what you owe an employer who is struggling when what she needs from you conflicts with what someone else is relying on you to tell them?
What raters look for
- Professionalism
- Is reliable, respects boundaries and confidentiality, and holds a consistent standard under pressure.
- Ethics
- Weighs competing duties honestly, protects people from harm, and stays accountable to rules and values.
